What Is Off-Grid Communication?
Off-grid communication means sending and receiving messages without relying on traditional infrastructure like mobile networks, the internet, or landlines. This is essential for anyone venturing into areas with unreliable or no coverage. Technologies that enable off-grid communication include two-way radios, mesh networking devices, satellite phones, and short message devices. Each has its own strengths, but mesh networking stands out for its flexibility and affordability.
Meet the ThinkNode-M1
The ThinkNode-M1 is a LoRa-based transceiver that’s fully compatible with the open-source Meshtastic project. LoRa (Long Range) is a radio technology that enables long-distance, low-power communication in unlicensed frequency bands. The ThinkNode-M1 uses this to create a mesh network, allowing you to send text messages and share your location without any need for cell towers or Wi-Fi.
Key features of the ThinkNode-M1 include:

- 1.54-inch E-ink display for clear visibility outdoors and in low light
- Built-in GPS for accurate location sharing

Inside the box, you’ll find the device, a detachable antenna, a USB-C cable, and a quick start guide. The device is lightweight and can be easily attached to your gear.
How Meshtastic and LoRa Work Together
Meshtastic is an open-source project that leverages LoRa to create decentralized mesh networks. Devices running Meshtastic can relay messages between each other, even if some are out of direct range, by hopping messages through intermediate nodes. This makes it possible to communicate over long distances and around obstacles, all without any central infrastructure.
Setting up the ThinkNode-M1 is straightforward. After charging, you power it on, pair it with your smartphone using the Meshtastic app (available for iOS and Android), and configure the channel settings. The app lets you send messages, view device status, and see your location on a map. Communication is encrypted and can be tailored for group or private messaging.
My Real-World Experiment
To test the ThinkNode-M1, I set up two devices, each paired with a separate phone. After configuring them on the same channel using the Meshtastic app and QR code sharing, I took one device for a walk around my neighborhood while my testing partner stayed stationary at an open oval.
We exchanged messages using the app, and the devices relayed them over LoRa radio—no mobile network required. Even with trees, houses, and other obstacles, we maintained reliable communication at distances up to 380 meters. With more nodes or a higher antenna, the range could be extended even further. At one point, my device discovered another node 91 kilometers away, thanks to message relaying through five intermediate nodes.
The built-in GPS made it easy to share and view each other’s locations, which is especially useful for group hikes or search and rescue scenarios.
